Jake pulled off to the side of the road. He’d done another plumbing call for Hank, this time a little farther out of town. On the way back, he decided to call his sister again, after getting a destructive-sounding text from her earlier that day. The first couple times he dialed her number, it went straight to voicemail, and he needed to hear her, to make sure she was all right.

“Jake?” Lisa answered.

“Is everything okay?” he asked.

“Not really. My life’s a mess.” She quietly wept into the phone.

“Care to elaborate?”

“Stewart and I are probably through. He doesn’t know it yet, but I can’t take it anymore.”

“I’m sorry you’re still having trouble. Can you leave it, and wait to see how you feel after coming out here for a few days? Sometimes being apart can clear your mind and give you a fresh perspective,” Jake suggested.

“I told myself that if he came home later today, that was it. That I’d throw away his cold dinner and pack my things.” Jake could tell she was fighting tears now.

“I’m here for you, sis. Remember how hard it was moving in with Grandma?” Jake asked, changing the subject.

She laughed at this, a hidden sob squeaking out. “You were the ever-doting big brother, always there to make sure I was fine. What should I do?”

“He’s not cheating, right?”

“No,” she said.

“Does he love you?”

“Yes,” she said quietly.

“Do you want to be with him?”

She didn’t answer right away. “I think so.”

“Then give it some time.”

Jake heard the sound of a car’s alarm system beeping once. “Stew’s home. I’ll talk to him. Thanks for listening. See you soon.”

“Lisa,” Jake started.

“Yes?”

“Love you.”

“Love you too.”

The call ended, and Jake ran his hands through his hair. His sister loved to overreact to things, and had ever since she’d been a little girl, but she’d been through a lot, and Jake couldn’t blame her.

He checked behind him to make sure no one was coming, and cruised back onto the road. Maple Mountain Resort was coming up on the right, and he decided he’d text Monique later to let her know he was sorry about the way things had turned out. Deep down, he doubted a girl like her cared much, but he still wanted to have some closure on whatever that had been.

Jake drove home, anxious to get through the next couple days.
